11thアルバム。メインプロデューサーに、彼らの初期の作品ではおなじみのSteve Lillywhiteを起用。 数曲Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois、Flood、Chris Thomas、Jacknife Leeも参加。前作『All That You Can't Leave Behind』の成功から本作も勢いにのって大ヒットしました。当時、先行シングル「01. Vertigo」が勢いがあったのでちょっと期待していたのですが、 聴いてみたらやっぱり落ち着いたロック。でも彼らの作品としては『Achtung Baby』以来の聴きやすいアルバムでした。
